Boar Semen Testing
The Polymerase Chain Reaction test is carried out through Diagnostic Services at the University of Prince Edward Island. It is a test that looks for the Porcine Reproductive & Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) virus in the semen. Ordinarily, weekly (Tuesday) testing of semen is performed, and the results are usually available by the Wednesday afternoon of each week.
PCR test results of purchased semen may be ordered and results will be faxed as soon as available ($25.00 per boar).
In spite of all our precautions taken to reduce the risk, we cannot absolutely guarantee no disease transmission will occur when using fresh boar semen.
IGP bases its genetic improvement on the world renowned Canadian Swine Improvement Program (CSIP) delivered through the PEI
